DOCX Metadata Remover: Remove Author from Word

A Word file records who wrote it, who saved it last, the company, how long it was edited, and often a thumbnail of the first page. Choose a .docx, review each field, and download a cleaned copy. The text, comments, and tracked changes are not touched, and the tool tells you which of them are present.

What happens locally

A focused cleaner, not a black box.

01

Every field, your choice

See the author, last modified by, dates, company, template, editing time, custom properties, and preview thumbnail with their real values, then tick only what you want gone.

02

Everything else stays byte-identical

Only the metadata parts of the file are edited. Every other part of the document is compared with the original after cleaning, and no download is offered if anything differs.

03

Private local processing

The file is unpacked and rewritten in a worker inside your browser. It is never uploaded, and the ZIP timestamps are reset so the file does not record when it was cleaned.

Important limit

This removes file properties, not content. Text, comments, tracked changes and the names attached to them, hidden sheets, speaker notes, embedded images, and embedded objects stay in the document and are reported but not removed. Password-protected files, legacy .doc, .xls, and .ppt files, and macro-enabled files are not supported. Rewriting a digitally signed file invalidates its signature. Verification is structural; the result was not opened in Microsoft Office.

Questions & boundaries

Know exactly what the clean copy means.

File formats are messy. These answers describe the supported behavior of this version—not a promise that every trace everywhere has disappeared.

01How do I remove the author from a Word document?

Choose the file on this page. It lists the author, last modified by, company, dates, and other properties it finds. Keep the boxes you want removed ticked, click Clean, and download the new copy. Your original file is never changed.

02What metadata does it remove?

Document properties (author, last modified by, title, subject, keywords, comments, category, dates), application properties (company, manager, application, template, editing time), custom properties, and the preview thumbnail.

03Does it remove comments and tracked changes?

No. Comments and tracked changes are part of the document, and removing them changes what it says. The tool lists how many it found and who made the tracked changes so you can deal with them in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint before sharing.

04Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read and rewritten inside your browser. You can confirm this in the Network panel of your browser's developer tools.

05Can't I do this in Word or Excel?

Yes, if you have the Office desktop apps: they include options to inspect a document and remove personal information. This tool is for when you do not have Office on the device, such as a phone or a Chromebook, or when you have many files to clean in one pass.

06Which files are not supported?

Password-protected files, the older .doc, .xls, and .ppt formats, and macro-enabled files (.docm, .xlsm, .pptm). Save the file as a standard .docx, .xlsx, or .pptx first.
