What metadata can an MP3 file contain?
An MP3 is more than its audible music or speech. Embedded tags can store the title, artist, album, album artist, track and disc numbers, date, genre, composer, comments, lyrics, copyright, encoder information, identifiers, chapters, ReplayGain values, and cover artwork.
These fields are useful for organizing a music library, but they may reveal more than you intend when you share a demo, podcast draft, voice clip, or downloaded track. The embedded tags are separate from the filename, operating-system file properties, and records already kept by a cloud or social platform.
How to remove MP3 metadata locally
- Open the MP3 Metadata Remover, then select or drag in one or more .mp3 files. You can process up to 20 files, with a 100 MB limit per file.
- Review the detected tags and cover artwork before cleaning. This lets you see what the file currently exposes.
- Start cleaning. The tool removes supported tag containers while retaining the MP3 audio stream without re-encoding it.
- Review the result report and download the cleaned copy. Your original file remains unchanged on your device.
- For an independent second pass, open the MP3 Metadata Checker and inspect the downloaded file again.
The MP3 Metadata Remover and MP3 Metadata Checker both run in your browser. Your selected audio bytes are processed locally and are not uploaded to AI MetaClean or an AI model.
Which MP3 tag formats are removed?
| Tag format | What it can contain | Where it is found |
|---|---|---|
| ID3v2 | Rich text fields, comments, lyrics, identifiers, chapters, and artwork | Usually at the beginning of the file |
| ID3v1 | A small fixed set of title, artist, album, year, comment, and genre fields | At the end of the file |
| APEv2 | Flexible key-value fields and other application-specific data | Usually near the end of the file |
| Lyrics3 | Lyrics and related text fields | Near the end of the file |
Will removing metadata affect audio quality?
No audio re-encoding is needed. AI MetaClean identifies the MP3 audio range, removes the supported metadata containers around it, and retains the MPEG Layer III audio bytes. It compares SHA-256 hashes of the retained audio before and after cleaning so the result can report whether the audio stream stayed byte-for-byte identical.
The complete file hash and file size will normally change because the tag bytes were removed. That change is expected and does not mean the audible audio was recompressed.
What metadata removal cannot erase
Removing tags does not alter information inside the sound itself. Spoken names, song lyrics, background conversations, audible watermarks, and other identifying audio remain. It also does not defeat acoustic fingerprinting or erase copies, activity logs, and account records already held by another service.
Renaming the file only changes its visible filename; it does not remove embedded ID3 or other tag data. Sidecar files stored beside the MP3 must also be reviewed separately.
When should you clean MP3 metadata?
- Before sharing an unreleased music demo or rough mix outside your team.
- Before publishing a podcast draft, interview excerpt, or voice recording that does not need creator and software tags.
- Before sending an audio file to a form, marketplace, client, or public download page.
- When creating a clean distribution copy while preserving the tagged master in your own archive.
Frequently asked questions
What metadata can be stored in an MP3?
An MP3 can contain title, artist, album, dates, track numbers, genre, composer, comments, lyrics, copyright, encoder details, identifiers, chapters, ReplayGain values, and embedded artwork, depending on the tag format and the software that created it.
Does removing ID3 tags reduce MP3 quality?
Not when the audio stream is retained without re-encoding. AI MetaClean removes supported tag containers and compares the retained audio bytes before and after cleaning; the file size and complete-file hash still change because metadata was removed.
Can I remove MP3 cover art and lyrics?
Yes. Embedded cover art and lyrics stored inside supported ID3, APEv2, or Lyrics3 metadata are removed with their tag containers. A separate image or lyrics file beside the MP3 is not part of the MP3 and must be handled separately.
How can I check whether MP3 metadata is gone?
Download the cleaned copy and open it in the MP3 Metadata Checker. For a high-stakes workflow, inspect the result with another trusted metadata or hex-analysis tool as an independent check.
Does renaming an MP3 remove its metadata?
No. Renaming changes only the filename. Embedded ID3, APEv2, Lyrics3, artwork, comments, and other tags remain inside the file until they are removed.
Does removing metadata prevent audio fingerprinting?
No. Audio fingerprinting analyzes characteristics of the sound itself rather than relying only on embedded tags. Metadata removal improves tag privacy but does not make the audio anonymous.
