Why convert HEIC or HEIF?
HEIF is an image container format, and HEIC is the filename extension commonly used for HEIF images encoded with HEVC. Apple devices often save photos this way because it can keep good visual quality in a smaller file, but some websites, editors, forms, and older devices still expect JPG or PNG.
Conversion solves the compatibility problem. Cleaning at the same time solves a separate privacy problem: a phone photo can also contain capture time, device details, camera settings, GPS coordinates, XMP, or other embedded fields. AI MetaClean combines both steps in one local browser workflow.
How to convert HEIC / HEIF and remove metadata
- Open AI MetaClean and choose one or more .heic or .heif files. You can process up to 20 images, with a 100 MB limit per file.
- Review the recognized metadata, including any location, camera, date, author, software, or XMP fields the viewer can read.
- Choose JPG, PNG, or WebP as the output. If you leave Original selected for a HEIC/HEIF input, the tool uses JPG because HEIC/HEIF must be converted.
- Run the cleaner, review the result report, and download the new file. Your original remains unchanged on your device.
Should you choose JPG, PNG, or WebP?
| Output | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| JPG | Forms, email, social posts, and broad compatibility | Lossy compression; fine detail can change |
| PNG | Lossless output encoding and repeated editing | Usually a much larger file for photos |
| WebP | Web publishing and smaller modern image files | Some older software has weaker support |
Choose JPG when compatibility is the priority, PNG when you want lossless output encoding and accept a larger file, or WebP for a smaller web-ready copy. The source HEIC/HEIF image is decoded before any of these outputs are created, so even a PNG result is not a byte-for-byte preservation of the original compressed image stream.
Which metadata is removed?
AI MetaClean inspects supported HEIC/HEIF metadata and reports recognized fields such as EXIF camera data, GPS location, dates, author or artist values, software information, and XMP. The converted JPG, PNG, or WebP output is then cleaned with its format-specific parser and checked again before the result is offered for download.
Metadata removal does not hide information visible in the pixels. Faces, street signs, reflections, recognizable places, and visible watermarks remain in the picture. It also cannot erase copies or account records already held by another service.
Does HEIC conversion reduce image quality?
Conversion necessarily decodes and re-encodes HEIC/HEIF image data. The displayed dimensions stay the same, but colors, fine detail, and file size can change. JPG and WebP expose a quality control in the tool; a higher setting usually preserves more detail and creates a larger file.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between HEIC and HEIF?
HEIF is the broader container format. HEIC is the extension commonly used for HEIF images that use HEVC compression. In everyday use, people often use the terms interchangeably for iPhone photos.
Can I convert HEIC to JPG without uploading it?
Yes. AI MetaClean decodes the HEIC/HEIF file, creates the selected output, removes supported metadata, and verifies the result in your browser tab without uploading the image bytes.
Can I convert several HEIC photos at once?
Yes. You can add up to 20 supported images in one batch, with a 100 MB limit for each file. Every image is processed independently on your device.
Does conversion remove all metadata?
AI MetaClean removes and verifies the metadata structures it supports, but no browser tool should be treated as a forensic guarantee against every private, malformed, or future metadata container. Inspect the downloaded copy with an independent tool when the result is critical.
