How to Remove Metadata from MP4 and MOV Videos

Remove supported MP4 and MOV video metadata locally without re-encoding. Learn what is erased, what stays, and how to verify your downloaded video.

AI MetaClean

What metadata can an MP4 or MOV video contain?

A video file can contain more than the picture and sound you intend to share. Depending on the camera, editor, and export settings, an MP4 or MOV may include a title, author, comments, creation and modification times, location, artwork, track names, software identifiers, or private metadata blocks. These fields can travel with the file when you send a recording to a client, upload a demo, or publish a download.

Not every file contains every field, and location is not always stored in the same place. A location tag inside a supported metadata container is different from a separate GPS or timed-metadata track. AI MetaClean cleans the supported containers and flags extra tracks that this version cannot safely handle.

How to remove MP4 / MOV metadata in your browser

Open the Video Metadata Remover to start. The dedicated tool accepts one self-contained MP4 or MOV video at a time, up to 100 MB. Processing takes place on your device; the selected video bytes are not uploaded to AI MetaClean or an AI model.

  • Select or drag an .mp4 or .mov file into the tool. Keep the original somewhere safe.
  • Review the detected metadata and any compatibility warnings. If unsupported structures or extra tracks are found, cleaning is disabled.
  • Choose Clean & verify video. The tool erases supported metadata areas, rescans the output, and checks that the media data is unchanged.
  • Read the automatically expanded before-and-after metadata table, then download the cleaned video. You can also save the verification report.

What is erased, and what is preserved?

Scope of MP4 / MOV metadata cleaning
InformationCurrent behavior
Titles, author values, comments, artwork, and supported metadata blocksErased when stored in supported container metadata areas
Creation and modification times in supported container headersReset without changing the media timeline or duration
Location tags in supported user-data or metadata containersErased; separate GPS / timed-metadata tracks are not supported for cleaning
Encoded video and audio, rotation, color data, and playback structurePreserved without re-encoding
Supplemental information inside the encoded mediaRetained; outside the supported container-metadata cleaning scope

Some technical information must remain so players can interpret the file. A checker or another application may still report the codec, dimensions, duration, rotation, color information, or container brand after cleaning. Those playback properties are different from the supported private tags targeted by this tool.

Why can the file size stay the same without losing quality?

AI MetaClean overwrites supported metadata areas with zero-filled padding while keeping their size and the media offsets unchanged. The old metadata bytes are erased, but the total file size usually stays the same. A smaller download is not the test for whether cleaning worked.

The video and audio are not decoded and re-encoded. Before offering the cleaned copy, the tool compares SHA-256 hashes for every media-data region, reopens the output, and compares track properties and duration. The complete file hash can change when metadata is erased even though the encoded media remains byte-for-byte identical.

How to verify the downloaded video

After downloading the cleaned copy, open the Video Metadata Checker and select that downloaded file. This starts a separate read-only scan in your browser. Check the actual copy you plan to share, rather than selecting the original recording again.

No supported container metadata found means the file passed the current supported scan. It does not mean that every possible private field or identifying signal is absent. Files with unsupported structures or extra tracks receive a warning rather than a clean verdict. For important files, you can also inspect the downloaded copy with another metadata reader such as ExifTool or ffprobe.

Which videos are not supported in this version?

The first version focuses on ordinary self-contained MP4 and MOV files with supported video and audio tracks. Encrypted or DRM-protected files, fragmented MP4, external-media references, unknown structures, and extra tracks such as subtitles, timecode, GPS, or timed metadata cannot be cleaned by this version. Files above 100 MB are also outside the current limit.

Metadata cleaning does not remove faces, license plates, spoken names, visible or audible watermarks, or other information in the recording itself. It does not erase platform activity logs or account records. A downloaded file also receives local filesystem properties, so a creation date shown by your operating system is not necessarily a remaining embedded recording date.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove metadata from MP4 and MOV without uploading?

Yes. AI MetaClean processes supported MP4 and MOV files in your browser. The cleaner and checker do not upload the selected video bytes to a server or an AI model.

Will metadata removal reduce video or audio quality?

For supported files, the cleaner retains the encoded video and audio without re-encoding. It compares the media-data hashes and checks the output's tracks and duration before offering the download.

Does the tool remove all GPS data from every video?

No. Location tags inside supported metadata containers are erased. Separate GPS or timed-metadata tracks are not supported for cleaning in this version; they trigger a warning and disable cleaning.

Why does my cleaned video still show a creation date?

The date may be a filesystem property assigned when the download was saved, rather than embedded video metadata. Check the downloaded file with the Video Metadata Checker to distinguish supported container fields from local file properties.

Can I clean several videos or convert MOV to MP4?

The current video tool processes one MP4 or MOV at a time, up to 100 MB, and preserves the detected source container. Batch processing, conversion, and compression are not part of this video workflow.
